Jackie sniffed the air in the tunnel she had just dug and thought she smelled something extremely disagreeable. She sniffed some more and then she knew it: castor oil! Gah! She hated castor oil. In fact all moles did. It wasn’t so much the smell as the composition of the substance that made her stomach turn.

Now how in God’s name had the stuff ended up in her precious tunnel? And it was a great tunnel, having yielded a lot of prime grub.

She quickly returned to her burrow to report to her husband.

Dave was enjoying a nice rest, lying on his back and generally dreaming of good things to come, when his slumber was rudely interrupted by the arrival of his spouse.

“They’re pouring castor oil into our tunnels, Dave,” she lamented. “Can you believe it?”

“So?” he said. “Go talk to that cat friend of yours. If what you were telling me is true he’ll be able to talk to his human, and tell her to cut it out.”

“I know, but there’s a new sheriff in town. Her name is Francine, and she reminds me of the idiot who set off firecrackers in our home that time—remember him?”

“Do I?” said Dave with a frown. “That fool almost killed us! Are you telling me he’s here?”

“No, she just reminds me of him. Not sure why, but at least she’s not using firecrackers. Instead she’s pouring castor oil in my new tunnel.”

“Nasty woman,” Dave growled. “Looks like we’ll have to move again, huh?”

“Looks like it,” Jackie confirmed. “Unless…”

“Unless what?”

“Unless I can convince Max to work his magic.”

“Max being…”

“The tubby orange cat I was telling you about.”

“Right, right.”

“I’ll go and talk to him now. This castor oil business has got to stop. It’s not nice.”

“Oh, and tell Max to tell his human to water the lawn. Place is parched!”

Dave was right as always, Jackie thought as she started her trek to the surface. She passed the kitchen, where a couple of juicy worms were waiting to be devoured, then passed the nursery, where her four babies were napping, the sight of which never failed to put a smile on her face. Finally she reached the surface, and cautiously stuck her head out. She glanced left and right but when she couldn’t detect any sign of the woman or her castor oil, she ventured out into the garden, in search of Max and Dooley.
